Winter Adventures with Benny

As a kid, I loved winter. Winter meant Christmas and snow days to look forward to. And I loved playing in the snow! As an adult, winter brings quite a bit of negativity along with it. Snow becomes more of a pain, having to shovel your way through it and brush it off your car. Winter brings with it the cold, and I don’t handle the cold very well. And not to mention all those added joys that winter brings to horse ownership. Our outdoor water bucket has a deicer in it, which is a wonderful invention, but our hose is completely unusable once temperatures hit freezing. Filling the water bucket means filling jugs in the house and carrying them outside to the field. It’s a never ending process.

Over the years, I reached a point in my life where I outgrew my love for winter and just started to wish for spring as soon as the snow started to fall. But you know what they say; if you fail to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy but the same amount of snow. Photography has helped me rediscover my love of winter. There’s something magical about winter photography, and I’ve started to find joy in capturing that magic.

Today would have been an easy day to stay inside. With no other commitments, and Mother Nature struggling to decide whether today should be snowy or rainy, it was tempting to just stay in bed all day. But instead, I bundled up, threw my gear bag and my bestest friend into the car, and headed out to make some winter memories.
